Profile
Born in Fukuoka in 1995 and raised in Hiroshima, Kohei Fukushima observes and reconstructs society through his unique filter, driven by a rebellious spirit shaped by Japanese pop culture and American street culture.
His studies in architecture provide structural balance, while his musical background adds a rhythmic pulse, and his experience as a professional BMX rider brings dynamic physicality and a sense of adventure. Together, these elements resonate to create a distinct sense of harmony in his artwork.
Beginning his artistic career in 2018, Fukushima created his signature motif, "BUCKET BEAR," and later launched an NFT art project in 2022, continuously updating his expression across physical and digital mediums.
Based in Rotterdam, Netherlands since 2024 to further challenge himself as a painter, Fukushima utilizes his innate ambidexterity and psychological duality to explore the fundamental light of "seeing" and perception. Through an alternate process of construction and destruction on canvas, he seeks to integrate the individual with the universal.
About my works
In an era dominated by hyper-rationalization and efficiency, where every phenomenon is reduced to data and information, I attempt to fundamentally question and reconstruct the act of "seeing" through the medium of painting.
The "light" I explore is far more than a physical beam illuminating a canvas or object. It is perception itself—the elemental process by which we encounter the world and translate it into consciousness.
Amidst a culture saturated with superficial visual stimuli and consumed by information, I raise the question: "Do we truly see the world?" My goal is to guide the viewer toward the raw, foundational landscape of perception hidden beneath the surface.
To realize this inner gaze—to awaken to the fact that my consciousness is actively shaping the world—is not merely a cognitive process; it is the pure origin of "love."
The way we perceive, and the way we open ourselves to accept others and surrounding phenomena, generates the reality in which we exist and lends it an undeniable warmth. Thus, painting becomes my response to the world: a quiet prayer for connection.
Rather than capturing a predetermined, static outcome, I aim to fixate the fluid movement of consciousness itself onto the canvas.
Instead of orchestrating a calculated harmony, I directly embrace physical impulses, subtle hesitations, and serendipitous moments as they occur, rendering the trajectory of perception visible.
In bringing this generative process to light, I seek to articulate both the fragility of the self and the profound truth that our genuine proof of existence resides within a momentary flux.
